Hi,
If you look at the output of dmesg, (or cat /var/log/messages)
do you see any reference to pcmcia?
Messages like, pcmcia not loaded, pcmcia and error,
module not loaded.
Commands you can use are
dmesg | grep -i pcmcia
grep -i pcmia /var/log/messages
