Good point. With a bit of swapping I can now say that the problem does
not seem to involve caddies and involves two drives on the same cable.
If I pull out hdb, copying hda->hdc and hdc->hda works fine. Any combo
of hda and hdb fails.

I could try that out, but the system's owner needs the caddies, so "more
cables" seems to be the way to go.

Don't have it set up. Wouldn't do its owner much good.
