Andrew's just asked me to forward this to the list.

-------- Original Message -------- Subject: How to copy a user to a new HD Date: Mon, 04 Apr 2005 23:13:13 +0100 (BST) From: Andrew Errington <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi,

I have just installed a new, bigger, hard drive in my server, and installed
Debian 3.0 r4 on it. The base OS is running nicely, and I now need to copy
user home directories from the old drive to the new one. The new drive is
installed as hda, and the old drive is temporarily attached as hdc.

I have two 'simple' user accounts, one for my weather station and one as a
shell account for a friend. I have two 'complex' accounts, that is myself
and my wife, which we both use with KDE desktop for mail, web browsing,
wordprocessing etc.

I copied the 'simple' accounts with no trouble:

cd /home
cp -a /mnt/old/home/userdir .

but when I copied the 'complex' accounts nothing works. That is to say, KDE starts up and looks the way it used to, but clicking on a menu or icon (or pressing ALT-F2 and trying to run an app) has no effect.

Is this too simplistic an approach, or have I missed something subtle?

Google is no help, probably because I cannot phrase the search well enough.

Any clues would be appreciated (yes, I have created the users with the
correct UID).

Thanks,

Andy
