I want to endorse Deane's endorsement of Snap. I use Snap A while ago I was trying to get the new V92 and V44 modem protocols to work with dial up internet.
I could not get it to work in either Windows or Linux. After multiple calls to try & get it to work I was invited to bring my computer to their premises and try it out on a line known to work with these new protocols. Ultimately we failed to get it to work, but my point is not many ISP's would actually suggest that you bring your gear to their premises for diagnosis.
