Ya i can vouch for lftp as being user friendly(ish) I mean i got to grips with 
lftp quite quickly ( very powerful ftp beastie).

can do multiple gets on the same file by using -p option and if you do a nice 
-19 lftp b4 you run lftp then it gets a lot of cpu time ( on dailup so i want 
to make sure the program gets high cpu time to encourage quicker d/ls).

give it a try it might surprise you it what else it can do.
