Hi, while it is not necessary to to log in as root, there are times when it is much much more convenient to log in as root. For example, when you want to run ethereal and examine the contents of the packets on the network.
When logging in as root, you can be prevented from opening a graphical component (such as ethereal). This "can" raise the blood pressure. If you do ssh -X [EMAIL PROTECTED] it will ask you for a password, and let you past all that "you are not allowed to access the display" stuff. I certainly prefer to run yast in a windowing session, than inside a text console. Derek.
