An "ISO" file, when talking about CDs and storage, is a file containing
and ISO-9660 filesystem.

Definitely not an "ISO" file. ;)
Try it with -t hfs as well, and leaving out the -t xxx altogether.
What does file xxx.dmg detect? If it's compressed in any way, you might
have to decompress it first before being able to loop-mount it. It's
also possible that the actual filesystem starts at some byte-offset into
the file, which would require mount -ooffset=numberofbytes. Note that
numberofbytes is probably silently truncated to the nearest lower
multiple of 512 or 2048.
Please post the output of
od -Ax -tc xxxx.dmg | head
