Have you ever found yourself trying to fix stuff on a minimal install box,
that doesn't have emacs as yet?
If you lucky, you are forced to hack things with nano or joe, if you are
unlucky, it's back to vi.
Either way it irritates me. But now one of the first packages I install is
zile.
Zile Is Lossy Emacs.
It's a small quick editor that behaves more or less like emacs.
I also find it useful for one line changes when I can't be bother to wait
for emacs to load. (I have lots of emacs goodies loading in my ~/.emacs)
