I just don't understand this. You're all prepared to put in the hard yards learning to use linux effectively, but balk at an editor that's voted the best! [1] What's counterintuitive about a = append, i = insert : = command, :q = quit, :wq = write and quit? And many : commands are the same as sed, so you're not having to learn anything that is useless out of this context. Also, all the pattern matching constructs out of grep are available in searches and substitutions. Can you use grep and sed in nano or joe? Do you have syntax highlighting in many, many languages?
