Hey! I have trouble with incoming ssh connections being dropped! I am on Telstra Cable... I have had this problem before. Here are the symptoms: I have a Motorola SurfBoard cable modem from Telstra. It connects to a hardware router which gives me 4 local network ports. The only port I have open is port 22, which is routed to my server. All incoming connections to port 22 are logged to a terminal window showing the output of tcpdump. Generally I have three known users on the 'outside' and several million unknown users. All of these people like to connect to port 22 on my box. Usually their actual IP address is visible in the logs, but once (in June) I had a big scare as the IP address being logged was my own external IP address! This means that it is impossible to distinguish between the machines that are connecting to me. When this happens I get a secondary symptom of all incoming ssh sessions (established by the three known users) get dropped after random amounts of time. A temporary solution is to reset the router, but if it's a bug in the router I'd like to know what triggers it. Incidentally, I believe that Telstra has a routing problem. A friend of mine in Christchurch using dialup cannot establish a link to my machine, but he can get to websites and get his mail. I know my machine is accessible from the net as I have other people connecting to it successfully. I need to ask Telstra about that as I just moved onto a new network as I signed up for the (appalling) new plans. If you find anything, let me know. If you need someone to help with experiments, let me know (off-list is best). Andy
