girder is reputedly good IR remote software for windows. I am not sure
what you mean by PDA remote control, but many PDA's have infra-red, but
its of a different protocol to what most consumer IR devices use. Not to
say its inpossible of course, but there are lots of consumer ir devices
that are more practical I suspect.  It is nice to see someone using a
Microsoft MCE remote for a myth tv box :-)

for home  users:

mythtv

media server for the whole house

control the sprinkler system

control the home brew system

not get viruses or spyware

kewl stuff as such is usually possible on any OS, and geeks will make a lot of 
stuff happen just for the sake of it.

Think of some things you'd like to see your computer do :-)

All of those kewl things above are not unique to linux.
