Hmmm - a few RX packets, but no TX packets. I've seen this caused by
an IRQ conflict in the past (more than once). Any chance this is the
case here?
Can you move the card to another PCI slot?

Unfortunately no, it's an onboard card. Putting another card in is an
option on Monday (I have some spares at home).
This reminds me of one of my earliest linux experiences, I had installed
Mandrake something, iirc, the network difficulties eventually were
traced to a faulty driver (or is that module?) and installing the first
Fedora release was the cure in the end.
I've got a kubuntu disk here too, which I had intended trying in a
virtual machine. I'd prefer staying with suse for the second OS on this
machine for now if I can...
