In my experience vmware do offer some precompiled kernel modules for
some distros, for the rest you have to compile your own. I would have
thought that SuSE *might* be one of those that they precompile for.
(Based on SuSE being popular and well defined in terms of kernel
versions).

vmware provide a perl configuration script. Its a while since I replaced
my kernel and therefore a while since I had to run it, but it is named
something like vmware-config.pl. As I recall it the script output
indicates that it looks for a kernel it recognises and only if it
doesn't have a kernel/module match does it require gcc (to compile a new
one).

If Roger wants a free alternative, he might like to try qemu, others in
the group have had a lot of success for running the odd windows program.
