Distros should have by default the version of gcc that was used to
compile the kernel, and probably the rest of the system too.

Does ubuntu give the option for an earlier version of gcc to match the
kernel?

Otherwise I guess you can compile a new kernel with gcc 4.01 and then
install nvidia...
