Could someone give me a clue what i should be looking for, and/or how to make

Not an answer to your question, but will achieve same end result:

$30 will get you something like a Pentium 166Mhz box from MoltenMedia
(Wordsworth St, Sydenham) which is more than adequete to run a
dedicated gateway like IPCop or Smoothwall.

Move your spare NIC (eth1) from the Mepis box to the $30 box (it
doesn't need screen or keyboard once installed) and set is as the
"green" interface. This will serve DHCP over eth1. The box can be
controlled via a web interface.
Plug your cable modem into the built in NIC (eth0) and set it as the
"red" interface - this is your outside world connection.

If you don't want to spend $30 on a separate firewall, check your DHCP
server settings to make sure it listens on eth1 on the Mepis box. I
don't use Mepis myself, but there may be a "share internet connection"
option that does all this automagically.

Be aware that Mepis is not a dedicated firewall OS, and may have
vulnerablities. Just because it's not Windows doesn't mean it's
bullet-proof!
