Now that's weird!  It sounds like there's some weird stuff going on in the 
background - MS Win9x acts like that when there's a rootkit or suchlike 
running.  MS WinXP would probably do the same.

Is the box a dual-processor?  If so and the other CPU's in there, the 
motherboard may be on its way out, or the CPU may have quietly died.
