No loss, but shouldn't happen. You didn't check the partition proposal
carefully enough before hitting go?

Be more specific. You used to be able to get the CD's boot menu when
booting from CD, but no longer? That is a faulty boot CD (it should do
something then though, and then crash), or a hardware failure with the
CD drive, and/or hard disk if it's on the same cable, or mobo failure.
Hardware error in any case.

Or do you get the CD's boot menu, and when you select "boot from hard
disk", you get a black nothing? I had that too, of course caused by a
failure to install a boot loader properly. In any case you should be
able to start "installation" from the CD's boot menu, and it installs
until the first reboot and then hangs, unless you're careful to ensure
yast is putting grub right this time round. (Well you can go in and fix
the loader of course, but it's not beginner's material.)
