There seems to be a kernel issue with the distributed Ubuntu that renders at least the tulip driver unstable ... if there are errors in kern.log you may have the same problem https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.15/+bug/48287 Switching to the dfme module seems to help, too.
