I agree - I have a bunch of them in use here, and they go nicely with better
range than other brands I've used.

Work's ones run OpenWRT, but dd-wrt is also a good option.

Sveasoft and friends are not a lot different to the linksys standard
firmware (and none of them would allow 192.168/16 on the LAN side.)

If you can build an AP cheaper then buying one then go for it.

If you are going to buy one, then a good option is the Linksys WRT54GL which

is pretty cheap, and is sold pretty much specifically for loading custom 
Linux firmware on. It's ~$150
