Hey thanks guys. Volker's suggestion of Tastech is pretty good - they have 305m boxes of 5e for $115 incl GST, which was just the sort of thing I'm looking for. They don't have a price listed for their cat6 so I'm emailing them to find out. If the premium for cat6 isn't too much I'd like to go for the "future proofing" that this enables. Who knows, next year I may be wanting to stream video around the house ...
The electrical wholesalers I got hold of quoted the $420 +gst type of figure. Sorry, I was a bit unclear. My wired networking with linux has always been straightforward, it's wireless I've never got to work properly. The work lappie I'm currently using has a slax usb stick that I've been trying to get going off and on for quite a while now. I figure the more I can get wired the better. Kerry. I'm not too certain you need cat6 - are you going 10gig? Networking shouldn't be any problem, wired or wireless, although many of the older distros required manual builds to get hardware supported. I use atheros based hardware wherever possible to get wireless connectivity, as the madwifi project is very well supported. Steve
