Setup strings can usually be ascertained from the modem's windows setup
file which has the suffix .inf. Below is a random sample from my w2k
box. Its not quite as "clear text" as a file you might find in /etc, but
it does seem clear that this line is highly relevant:
HKR,Init,2,,"AT &F V1 E0 &C1 &D2 S95=249<cr>"
I think HKR is a shortcut to somewhere in the registry, so presumably
this info is also somewhere in the registry if that modem is installed.
The inf file will be probably in c:\winnt\inf\ but identifying which
one relates to your modem may be a problem as all the stock windows ones
will be there too. If you still have the driver floppy or cd for the
modem or can locate the drivers on the net, then the inf file should be
included on the cd or the downloaded driver file.
Lastly I believe that you may be able to get some info on what the init
strings are from the modem applet in control panel, although I do not
have a windows computer with an installed modem driver to check. You may
also be able to get the name of the inf file from the control panel and
then find it on the hard drive.
In short, the init strings should be findable in windows.
Full sample inf file follows.
