Agreed.

This would indicate to me that there is an 'inconsistency' between pppd and
kppp together and/or the underlying ltmodem software modem driver.

I have been scouting around the 'Net courtesy Google, and found that there is
some talk about the software modem having to have the hardware handshaking
setup using the setserial utility, which is currently not on Alan's machine.
I find this surprising as kppp has a handshaking type setting. Perhaps it
does not work properly with ltmodem software modems?

The questions therefore are "Is setserial on the Mepis CD"?
If so, where do I RTFM for details of how install it.
If not where do I RTFM for details of how to install it from my lappie's http
server, or perhaps a USB memory stick?

linmodems.technion.ac.il seems to have come alive again albeit at dial-up
speed. I have got ltmodem-2.6.12-10-686_8.31b1_i386.deb from there as well as
the source files. I hope the .deb will install into Alan's machine. Anybody
know if the kernel revision and gcc versions used for the
ltmodem-2.6.12-10-686_8.31b1_i386.deb and the Mepis kernel on Alan's machine
are 'rough enough' to work?

Indeed!

Essentially I think we need to ensure that the Country setting is correct
using the AT+GCI=7E init. string
That the modem thinks it is to use hardware handshaking.
Google and I can't find this init. string. Any ideas?

If anybody who has Debian/Ubuntu/Mepis special knowledge would like to join
the fray at Alan's place tomorrow afternoon I'm sure they would be more than
merely welcome.
