My sister in law bought a cheapo "mp4" player in HK for my son, led me to believe he was getting an ipod for his birthday, turned out to be a piece of junk. [1] Well it works, but thats about all you can say.
The video must be encoded in some very obscure fashion, only windows will encode it (thats what the "mp4" refers to.) mp3 playing and fm radio is ok ish, but the user interface is a pita. Thats what really ruins it. The buttons are unintuitive, it took three days to work out that there was an engrish language option (that made it easier, but it is still a piece of crap frankly). I am not an ipod fanboy, but i guess the reason that they are expensive is a combination of brand (who cares), usability (i care) and the large storage (most owners seem to care). Anyway, steer clear of real cheapos unless you can try them in the shop and you are happy with the experience. Nick [1] I think in many people's view "ipod" has become a generic name, like "elctrolux" or "hoover".
