You could load Krecord
[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~ $ eix krecord

Then try to record you own voice to a file.
That works for me, but running skype emits the message:-
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:803:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) \
The dmix plugin supports only playback stream.
Ideas would be very welcome.
