Thanks Alan & Rob. I've just tried using an old US Robotics 56K FaxModem and sure enough it worked although the connection is only 33600. I've seen some threads saying that Mepis might work better with modems than Kubuntu so can you comment on this? I don't want to tell my neighbour to buy a modem if I can just install a different flavour of Linux for him. Or, if he does really need to buy a modem, can you recommend a current model that is known to work well? Cheers Tom
