Ah ok thanks Nick, in that case I put kppp back into the chain of things
to be suspect about.

Is there any alternative to kppp for those who don't have SUSE?

Too right. I have yet to see an ISP to which wvdial does not connect
either stupid or non-stupid, after entering nothing more than phone
number, user code and password (and assuming the mdoem itself works).
That piece of software is foolproof.

In this case the modem itself (and its driver) is the more likely
culprit though. To test fastest, temporarily connect an external modem.
This takes the modem out of the equation while leaving everything else
(ISP details, ppp negotiation, etc) in.
