Redhat 9's default kernel is probably too old to know about SATA.
Recommend you try a distro/version more up to date.
Did your win2k install require any futzing about to get the drives working?

If you tell us which distro you are attempting to install someone with 
experience of that distro will offer advice.

Most distros have relatively easy installers now.
