True. There's three chassis fans, which are a bit grimy. It's always
been too hot and noisy. Are the 'duo core' laptop choices out-performing
the P4s now?

Yes, 40GB is quite limiting now..
But I'd welcome it against this backup P-166's 100MB I've freed up under
Win98 to get Firefox & Thunderbird semi-crashproof on 48MB RAM. Ah,
these were the days (not!)

P.S. Readers, don't ever believe running GNU/Linux is cost-free - the
more hardware spec you throw at it the better. And then price the
prodigious time demanded of experience..
Buy a new laptop. Twice as good and half the price of the one you had.
