Hi everybody,
This is my first remotely serious post on the list. (Thanks to Andrew
Errington for making me aware of it).
On the laptop front, I bought a MacBook Core Duo 1.83ghz a few months
back, and have been very impressed. Paid AU$2000- inc GST and 2 gig
of RAM. Of course, if you buy in NZ you have to pay the NZ Apple
distributors "tax"...
Goes like a rocket, and triple boots OS X / Linux / Windows - and if
you run Parallels (not free, but cheap-ish) virtualization software,
you could run multiple linux builds at the same time. (A neat way of
testing LAMP server configs)
Though as Craig says, you need at least a Gig of RAM, and if your
running virtualization software, you will want 2 gig.

Apple perhaps? Go for at least a Gb of ram with room for more.
You know
you'll need more...

Buy a new laptop. Twice as good and half the price of the one you
had.
Hmm.. 2.66GHz(+) w/512MB(+) - brand recommendations?
