Can you ssh in from another machine, or do you have any more success using a 
terminal interface ( <ctrl>-<alt>-<F1>  and <ctrl>-<alt>-<F7> to return to 
graphical interface)? You could also try resetting X with 
<ctrl>-<alt>-<backspace>.
