go right to the exchange...Is this right?

We definatly had problems with echo NOT using the '*' box
going sip to sip. Going via an ADSL 'voip' modem using a
regular phone to SIP did have echo on my end (SIP end).

Just to clarify exchange -> ISDN -> Asterisk - > voip
