A printer isn't much good if it makes the coffee, but doesn't print ;)

I tried unsuccessfully to get an HP Color LaserJet 3500 to go with Linux
- so much for HP supporting Linux. No difference whatsoever between
jetdirect and going through a lose03server box. It's either "personality
not understood" (PCL) or a big pile of almost empty sheets of paper
(PS).

Postscript doesn't seem to exist any more these days, for Microsofties
it's an unneeded expense, and besides it goes at the end of a letter
doesn't it. PCL used to be ok but now has drifted to the proprietary,
that's why all those bells and whistles don't go. Not even 600dpi basics
of PCL-4 go on that color 3500. And this is HP.

Here's how it works: you must get a suitable PPD file. Take the doze one
for starters if there isn't anything more specific. That's a
prerequisite only though, not a ticket. On Linux the PPD files include
the ghostscript command line to use; in other words the piece of
software which is capable of generating proprietary printer instructions
from the snippets in the PPD file and your file to print. If there isn't
a ghostscript driver for some printer, than the thing is an expensive
paper weight as far as Linux is concerned.

Won't do you any good unless ghostscript is capable of translating your
wishes into proprietary-speek. No, going through a doze print server
won't change that unless that doze thing is capable of speaking
postscript; it's gone out of fashion and anyway some of those
"postscript" thingemies were shocking.

Search for a ghostscript plugin which can handle that printer model.
Ring Kyocera tech support. Don't buy Kyocera again.
