lo is most definitely required!
To totally bamboozle a unix person try   ifconfig lo down
and see all the weird and wonderful things that start going wrong.

Then the network person is a fool and needs to be shot.  WEP was cracked
years ago.  
Anything that speaks 11g should speak at least WPA-PSK personal, which has
not yet been cracked.

In the meantime, Steve's email contains the format for the iwconfig command
for WEP mode.
Whats the street address again?  How much bandwidth do you have?

The network person tells me that WEP is all there is. I'm trying to 
connect to a  NetComm Super-G Wireless Firewall Router if that helps.
