Since a recent fault on my line, my dial-up has been 28k. My fastest
used to be 48k.
56k modems rarely reach 56k.
How about reading mail on our cell phones? With some casual gprs plans

KMail requires an X server. Some people use console based mail clients
eg over an ssh connection. Again, what about mobile data charges on
mobile devices.
Text based mail clients still have their place.

Not an oaf - just unaccostomed to our culture. Please don't take our
bluntness personally - many geeks suffer from mild aspergers syndrome
and lack the ability to state things delicately.

Welcome to our world :-)
