The fact that dpkg was provides md5sum is (now) considered a bug. If you
have a recent enough version of dpkg (1.13.20) and coreutils (5.93-1),
you'll find that /usr/bin/md5sum is the coreutils version.
If you're stuck with older versions of the packages, you can find the
coreutils version at /usr/bin/md5sum.textutils.
(textutils, fileutils, shellutils are all now included in the coreutils
package)
