This depends on the role I want to fill and where I want the company to go.
I have different expectations of each applicant.
The degGeek could have a more formal approach to things. If I'm wanting
degGeek to do a sales eng role as well as just fix things then the
choice is simple. His name simply looks better on my sales proposals.
The Guru may have a more real world approach to fixing things and be
list limited by trained structure. If I want someone who can just fix
things fast and relate well in the cyber world then Guru may be my choice.
If I want to grow my company then the other skills that come with a grad
may be useful. However paper doesn't always translate to delivery.
I would expect the degGeek to have better project management skills with
respect to planning new IT direction. Their requirements analysis
skills might be better.
Why do you ask? This post is a bit hard to respond to because you
haven't really given us much scope.
Cheers Don

Hi there,
I was wanting to know everyone's thoughts regarding the value of
formal education in today's world. Specifically of course refering to
IT.
For example Joe Bloggs comes to turns up to an interview with
ABCComputers with a brand new degree degree, great skills to perform
the job (specifics NOT relevant here) and demonstrated practical
experience. John Doe also turns up on the same day to ABCComputers
with no formal education (save high school) but the same skill level
(in the employer's opinion) as Mr Bloggs, but much more practical
experience. Who will get the job and why?
