At this point helpful people are trying to figure out whether you have a winmodem (one that uses a program running on your PC to steal the CPU time needed to do all thing modemy) or one that has all the bits on the board and just looks like a serial modem. Winmodems are generally hostile to Open Source operating systems, and so need a different mechanism to coax them into life. The output of the lspci command and dmesg command are often helpful at this point too. Vik :v)
