The only DVD drive I have is the one the LiveCD in running on. I'll have a go on the machines at work tomorrow.

vfat. Find a minimal bootable system which loads itself into RAM and
gives up use of the DVD driver after boot. You need a system with
UDF fs support. Or, as Linux kernels have been able for years to mount
DVDRAM read/write (so I've been told), try whether this is included in
the kernel you're using.
