OK, so it's not a problem with gnome-admin-tools, it's a problem with gksu not correctly setting up the environment for an X connection; I don't know much about xauth but at least it's a diagnosis you can search the bug trackers with.
xterm did open up logged in as root ok though, both asked for password and accepted fine.
The fact that xterm eventually opened suggests that the error message isn't actually fatal though. Odd. What OS/version?
