I second that/then again ...

and Jim don't you laugh!!

Rik i believe would like to raise the importance of FOSS/GNU in CHCH and
further into NZ in a political and community way.

trouble is how to do this!

1 have a user group in chch with an acceptable name
To Rik's credit he has done this in the form of the meetings he runs.
and other activities (ie the FOSS freedom day events)

2. Engage more people to be active in the promotion of FOSS and GNU.

His trouble is that we a too few in number in chch. To be like that and we are
not on the whole a group of people who are motivated to get behind an
ideology of the like that Rik would like or want.

90% of this list IMHO use a NON MS OS is because of the way MS is controlling
their OS and the behaviour etc of the entity that is MS.

i also know that each OS is controlling of their own product _but_ the big
thing that separates the NON MS OS is the fact that just because the default
distro of choice doesn't allow us to do something we are stopped from getting
a bit of software and installing it!
If we want that ability to do whatever we _can_ go get it direct from the
developers if necessary (good case in point is the proprietary media drivers
for music and video drivers).

Personally I think Rik will need to find like minded folk further a field
(which he has via the FOSS list etc). And accept that we are a dead cause as
far as changing this list's name.

now all this is very personal and i've probably upset Rik and a few others so
i'll await for the rebuttals.

Rik may i suggest that when you have an urge to raise a topic like this where
it has been thrashed out before. Start it write it and instead of emailing it
you delete it.

This will allow you to vent your opinions and views in writing (like writing
an angry letter but never posting it) might help you get over the issue and
keeps you on agreeable terms with the list (and i don't mean select
individuals either).

To the whole list who respond to these postings (me included) DON'T :)
