I think your idea is noble Don, however I personally wouldn't but a laptop,
who needs them save business executives? (I'm a business executive and I
don't even have a laptop!) I think it would be much better to start kids
off with a desktop.

Secondly I would encourage the kids to source second hand hardware on their
own (giving them some guidence perhaps) then let them come to you.

You are right in that kids can't get finanace and for very good reason. If
you don't have a manner to pay money back why should anyone loan it to you?
Kids with jobs who work after school etc and are under the age of 18 are the
exception here, but I still don't think it's a great idea to loan them
money.

And finally good on you for giving a rats about the local community. So
many people don't these days, but it's nice to see someone does. I think
your ideas and intentions are fantastic Don, but I also think they perhaps
need a little refining.

All the best with your project,

Chris Maher.

I did a quick poll of the LES kids today and discovered that almost all
of them are saving for some sort of laptop.

Kids can't get finance.

I'm thinking about setting up some sort of 'trust' arrangement where
they can borrow the money (with perants permission) to buy a budget
laptop off trademe.

What I'm interested to know is how many CLUGer's would like to provide
some of the financing.

It would be a loan only and also repaid with interest.

Comments welcomed.

Cheers Don
