I have always used it in the "device" section and my conclusion was
supported by the information I found and cited. Clearly, since it works
for you in another section, it means it can go there too. Good!
I don't see a reason to get worked up about it.

Roy, I'll send some suggestions offlist for your xorg.conf - there's
quite a number. They are only going to work with the i810 driver
though, so if you want dual monitors you are going to have to switch
back. However, 915resolution correctly tweaked should sort out the
resolution issue you have with i810.
