Unfortunately, as all debian based distros run from runlevel 2 (whether 
graphical or text based), that won't work. Will for RedHat and SuSE ( I assume 
as it's you posting ).

However, even then, you may well be starting and stopping a log of unnecessary 
processes, depending on your setup. <Ctrl>-<Alt>-<Backspace> and 
<Ctrl>-<Alt>-<F1> work from almost every distro I know of, and Slowlaris, 
HP-UX...
