If it does that again, use CTL+ALT+F1 to get a console and sudo vi /etc/X11/xorg.conf to fix it. You do need to reboot afterwards but you can use the reboot command rather than powering off. (Or keep a backup of the last working file and copy it back over xorg.conf).

A hassle rather than a problem - all it means is that it doesn't work on automatic. You need to edit the file: /etc/defaults/915resolution In that file there are two commented out lines xres and yres. Use those to set the 1400x1050.
