Indeed. I don't recall being asked to write code in any job interview.
Ever. I've been surprised that prospective employers haven't grilled
me that hard. Not that I'm unprepared, of course.
Also, I've never worn a tie to a job interview. I'm never sure if it's
a good thing or not.
I favour a person who comes with a portfolio of OSS projects worked on
that he can explain the whys and wherefors of.
Bummer for those of us who actually have a family and (non-geek) life
outside of work that we spend time on/with instead.
