Hi,
If you want a copy of Xcode I have a copy downloaded. Contact me off- list if you want it, a usb-key or DVD could be used to tranfer it. It would save you the download. There is a difference between the gcc apple distributes and stock gcc, it is that the apple one can make universal applications. If you just want the compiler then the Xcode package would be fine. You just don't install the documentation which makes up for most of the download/install. Around 1.3GB of docs.

I hope you have realized that Xcode is not only a compiler?
Yes, but I didn't see any other way to compile C. Now that Brett has
pointed out cctools, gcc looks like an easier option.
 If you
want to program just C without any GUI "connection" you could just
install Fink (http://finkproject.org/
) . Fink give you (on a Mac) the best of two worlds.

Looks interesting. I might give it a try.
 Thanks for your help,
Jamie
