Capacity on the cable is about to be upgraded by 50%, the contract was awarded to Alcaltel in the last week or so, it was in the news.
The plan is to further upgrade to double the capacity then eventually improve it to 2.4Tb.
The cable cost over a billion dollars to put there in the first place. At $24 million/year for a 15 year contract, the cable stake holders want a return before they buy more capacity of SXC.
Telecom is said to have used its capacity and is now trying to locate more content locally to reduce demand on its share.
However, cable costs don't impact on bb costs in NZ. That is driven by a whole set of different factors.
