This pc ( and I heartily recommend Acer as a brand for linux, and not just because I can get them trade either! ) had a really hard life, OS wise. I used it to build up releases of some open source software we've written. Because of this it had up to 10 different oses running on it. The primary one was debian, and I used the latest drivers from the madwifi project, updating about weekly. Some were good, others weren't, but I always had a backup wired network which worked flawlessly.
You might gain from installing the latest madwifi... or wait until the latest political shenanigans are ofer and it'll be integrated into every release (: The replacement is another Acer - dual core centrino but don't ask me the number - and that's working in a similar manner. I can't tell you how the display works ( it's primary os is now feisty ), but it's working just fine.
