Thanks Chris, I didn't even know such a thing as the LGOIMA and friends existed.

The CCC charge $70+GST/hr to extract the road data. Initially I was
told it might take a few hours, but then was quoted half an hour
yesterday. There was no mention of it being restricted in any way, but
it was clearly not a request that they get very often, if at all. I
didn't ask about the cadastral data.

I've just discovered that I can download the road data (and lots of
other digital data, including contours, but not cadastral) in ESRI
Shapefile format from the ArcIMS viewer on the nztopoonline site:

http://www.nztopoonline.linz.govt.nz/website/nztmtopo/viewer.htm

You can only download the data while viewing at 1:50000 or closer.
I've got all chch roads within a handful of downloads. Doesn't take
too long. Wouldn't want to do it for a much larger area though, unless
I can trick the software into thinking I can view huge areas at
1:50000 on the screen.

I'm investigating quantum GIS (www.qgis.org) at the moment. The new
0.9 version has python scripting support which is exactly what I'm
after. I downloaded it from svn last night and compiled it up. Looks
pretty good so far.

Chris, if you have the cadastral data for Chch, then that would be
great. I need the info to identify end-points on a trip in the
simulation. I could make some assumptions in the absence of the
cadastral data, but it would be nice to have the actual data there.

Cheers,
Carl.
