Hi Carl,
You might want to have a look at django, especially if your project will be
in any way web related... There is a branch in ongoing development concerned
with GIS (see here <http://code.djangoproject.com/wiki/GeoDjango> and
here)<http://code.djangoproject.com/wiki/GeoDjangoBackground#UsefulData>.
They are regulars on the django-dev mailing list and seem to be making great
progress. In addition, django ORM is a thing of beauty, and i would imagine
it can only be a good thing to apply that syntax and ease of use to GIS
data.
I'd be interested to hear a bit more about your project, progress and what
you think of the django branch; GIS is a real interest of mine :-)
